Edwin R. Permon was a member of both the Bedford Boomers and the Digital Equipment Corp. Railroad Club, and was very active in the NMRA HUB Division as well. Ed drove for standardization in module design early on when HO modules were first coming of age. He recognized that a large club did not need a permanent home but could be built in sections in members homes and joined together for large shows.  The Boomers and Digital club owe much to Ed for pushing for standards that allow us to take our modules to shows and set up with other clubs.

Ed had an outrageous sense of humor and could find subtle humor in the deepest subjects or could take a light topic to the ridiculous.  This sense of humor showed up in his club activities, his modeling projects, and his interaction with other club members.  In particular, he felt Model Railroading should be FUN!  Modules didn't have to have a specific prototype, or an exact modeling era; they could be whatever the builder wanted them to be.  To this belief, we established the Edwin R. Permon award when Ed suddenly passed away at an untimely age.

The "Permon" is awarded each year at the Annual Exhibition to the module or series of modules  that receives the most votes.  It is open to all modules and participants with the exception of modules that have already won. The voting is conducted by the participants at the exhibition and the award winner is announced the evening prior to the public opening of the show.  There are no rules about completeness, accuracy to detail, or similar restrictions. A plaque is presented, suitable for affixing to the module and a name plate is added to the permanent award plaque maintained by the Boomers.
